Ordering from Waiter.com can help you discover new cuisines (cuisines range from Japanese and Mexican to Thai and Caribbean) for a family dinner or simplify the task of ordering lunch for an office of 20. Benefits include no telephone miscommunication, easy specification of special requests and paperless menus for local restaurants right at your finger tips. Waiter.com also helps you save and manage time. Save favorite orders for future use and you can reduce order time to as little as 15 seconds, or, if you don't have time to order during the work day, order ahead and specify a later preparation time... Ordering food for takeout can also rescue you from long lines during the lunch hour.

Waiter.com started in 1995 when President and CEO Craig Cohen, who was then designing chips at Sun Microsystems, called the local Togo's sandwich shop to see if he could fax over an order. As a busy tech worker and an avid vegetarian, Cohen felt the ability to order via fax would allow him to make specific instructions clear and save precious time. When he was told the restaurant had a fax, but used it only to communicate with other locations, an idea was born.
Cohen called Michael Adelberg, a friend since junior high school with whom he had attended both the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford Business School. He pitched the idea of online ordering to Adelberg. The pair then sold TOGO'S Eatery on ordering on the Web and lined up additional Bay Area restaurants interested in an online ordering service. Their next step was to quit their jobs and develop the software needed to make Waiter.com happen.
When the site went live with
60 restaurants in 1995, Adelberg and Cohen had worked out a system whereby
a restaurant subscribed to the Waiter.com
service to have its menu appear online. Customers, who use the service
for free, are able to order from these menus online. Once an order is sent,
the restaurant receives a fax detailing all items and any special requests,
including whether the order is for take out, sit down or delivery and what
time and date it should be prepared. To ensure that the customer, who is
often hungry when ordering, receives the food they have ordered as fast
as possible, all orders are monitored by Waiter.com
and a help line, 1-800-WAITER-9, is available.
