Sometimes it’s almost impossible to grab a quick bite to eat during a hectic day. But with the creation of [Waiter.Com], you may never have to wait in long lunch-hour lines again. Now you can just point, click and eat.

[Waiter.Com] (http://waiter.com), an on-line service based in the Silicon Valley, acts as a computerized waiter for more than 300 independent and chain restaurants in California.

Currently, two Davis franchises – Togo’s Eatery and Boston Market – have joined the service as a convenient tool for customers to order up their meals at the click of a mouse and have it waiting for them in about 20 minutes either to take out or eat in. And what’s even better: the convenient service is free.

"The idea that you can order a pizza over the Internet is pretty new," said Craig Cohen, president of [Waiter.Com], adding that many customers who use the service have never purchased anything on-line before. "We think ordering food on-line is pretty compelling."

And that they should, since there is currently not much competition against [Waiter.Com], which was started about two years ago by Cohen and Michael Adelberg.

The Web site contains full menus and prices and has the ability to save what you ordered previously. So if you like your sandwich made a special way, you can just call up your previous order and send it again.

Dealing with the Waiter for the first time requires users to register with a user name and e-mail address. As soon as you register, a password will be immediately sent to your e-mail address.

If your server is a bit slow, you can count on a human being to give you the password immediately over the phone by calling [Waiter.Com] at [(800)-WAITER-9].

After you register, simply order from the menu and send your request. The order is then faxed to the restaurant and in about 20 minutes, you can walk into Togo’s or Boston Market, avoid the crowd and in a few minutes, you’re off and running again.

It’s really that simple. Upon ordering from Boston Market last week, the meal was prepared and waiting under a heat lamp, packaged and ready to go.

"This provides an extra added convenience for our customers," said Boston Market spokeswoman Margaret Bradley from the company’s headquarters in San Mateo.

Bradley said the service also provides easy ordering for Boston Market’s busy holiday season. Customers can order their entire Thanksgiving or Christmas turkey or ham meal from home.

She said the service is also perfect for businesses that are ordering large quantities of food.

"They can do it in the morning, before they get too busy," she added. "We’re really excited about it."

While the service is free to customers, restaurants must pay a fee for every order placed through the service.

Davis Togo’s co-owner Doug Dienelt said though he has had only a few [Waiter.Com] customers, the business cards at the store displaying the Web site are quickly disappearing.

"With Davis people being intellectuals, they do like this kind of thing," Dienelt said.
